DISINFO: After Afghanistan, the US could give up on the Baltic states
SUMMARY
The events in Syria, Afghanistan and Ukraine showed that it is better not to hope to get help from the US in the critical situation.
The US also has interests in Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia. It is using these countries and could leave them as Afghanistan.
RESPONSE
The message contains clear manipulation. The events in Syria, Afghanistan and Ukraine could be hard to compare, as well as the relations between the US and Baltic states have a different context.
Taliban came back to power in Afghanistan after the US and allies withdrew military forces earlier this year. As noted by US president Joe Biden: “We went to Afghanistan almost 20 years ago with clear goals: get those who attacked us on September 11th, 2001, and make sure al Qaeda could not use Afghanistan as a base from which to attack us again. We did that. <...> Our mission in Afghanistan was never supposed to have been nation building. It was never supposed to be creating a unified, centralized democracy. Our only vital national interest in Afghanistan remains today what it has always been: preventing a terrorist attack on American homeland”. Biden added that the US got Afghanistan’s people a chance to determine their own future but could not provide them the will to fight for that future.
The Baltic states are democratic countries, members of the EU and NATO. Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia participated together with the US in NATO's ISAF's mission in Afghanistan. The United States also fosters a robust and enduring security partnership with the three Baltic states of Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania.
