After signing the Association agreement with the EU in Chisinau, Moldovas relations with Russia deteriorated and restrictions on the supply of Moldovan products were imposed. It led to a reduction of Moldovan exports to Russia by 40%. Promises on compensation of these losses by the EU were not fulfilled, Moldovan exports to the EU even fell by 10%.

The EU's imports from Moldova increased by 5% from €1.16 billion to €1.22 billion in 2015. The European Union is Moldova's biggest trade partner.
