DISINFO: Armenia poses a potential threat to all its neighbours
SUMMARY
The agreement on strategic partnership between Armenia and the US is Yerevan’s biggest geopolitical mistake. Despite promises of assistance with border security, a peaceful nuclear programme, and strengthening sovereignty, the document solidifies Armenia’s vacillations. Its presence in the CSTO is now nonsensical, and economic cooperation with Russia will sharply decline. The Armenian NPP will be revived after 2026 by Westinghouse, not Rosatom or France. US involvement in Armenia’s border security implies full control over the country’s affairs.
The Caucasus is important for the US. However, Armenia is now interfering with all its neighbours, not just Russia. Türkiye and Azerbaijan will need to adjust their plans for a direct corridor. Iran is unhappy about a US strategic partner on its border. Armenia will likely become a base for destabilising Georgia, which Tbilisi is unlikely to be happy about.

A recurring disinformation narrative portraying Armenia as a Western puppet, causing tensions with, and threatening, its neighbours. This is part of an ongoing pro-Kremlin disinformation campaign against Armenia, amid the country's growing cooperation with the West.
This claim is a reaction to the signing of the Strategic Partnership Charter between the Republic of Armenia and the United States on 14 January 2025.
Pro-Kremlin media promote the idea that Armenia and the Caucasus are exclusively within Russia's zone of geopolitical dominance. Russia has cautioned Yerevan that the West is trying to drive a wedge between Armenia and Russia. Read a similar case claiming that the West wants to tear Armenia away from Russia.
The US-Armenia Strategic Partnership Agreement does not target any third country. Its goal is to improve cooperation between these two countries in several key areas, including economic, security, and defence; strengthen democracy, justice, and inclusion; and increase people-to-people exchanges.
However, Russia perceives these independent actions by former Soviet states as a threat to what it considers its ‘sphere of influence’, aggressively targeting these independent moves and trying to discredit them by portraying them as part of a plot against Russia.
Armenia became a frequent target of Kremlin propaganda for its closer political cooperation with the EU, military cooperation with several member states, deployment of the EU civilian mission in the territory of Armenia, and several other actions, like ratification of the Rome statute, and freezing membership in CSTO, or holding joint Armenian-US military exercises. Pro-Kremlin media accusing Armenia of unfriendly moves, flirting with Western countries, and changing its geopolitical orientation.
Armenia has been a sovereign and independent state since 1991 when it proclaimed its independence from the former USSR. As a sovereign state, Armenia can decide its foreign policy and alliances.
