Russian media are manipulating an article from the German newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung about Germany's defense capabilities. The publication states that it was Russian aggression against Ukraine that brought Europe to the brink of a new war. Based on the Kremlin’s aggressive motives, Germany must “be ready to defend NATO allies” from a possible Russian attack, the German publication says.
The article cites a statement by the head of the German Ministry of Defense, Boris Pistorius, who admitted that in the event of a Russian attack according to the “Ukrainian scenario” on Lithuania, where a German military group is stationed to protect NATO borders, the soldiers “will not last long.” Without enough drones, effective anti-drone defenses, the ability to fight Russian helicopters and without sufficient combat training in multi-dimensional combat using combined weapons, the Bundeswehr is “hardly ready for a modern conflict,” Pistorius concludes.
The authors of the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung article emphasize that for Germany this hypothetical scenario is considered the “worst-case scenario” and “is a guideline” for developing and implementing a defense strategy against a possible expansion of Russian aggression.
Following Russia's large-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, NATO member countries revised their Strategic Concept. The North Atlantic Alliance has recognized Russia as “the most significant and direct threat” to security in Europe. However, the allied countries specifically wrote out paragraph 9, which emphasizes that “NATO does not seek confrontation and poses no threat to the Russian Federation.”
