DISINFO: Brussels plans to militarise its civilian mission in Armenia
SUMMARY
The extension of the European Union's mission in Armenia does not serve peace and stability; it only creates tension at the border. The worst part is that Brussels plans to militarise this civilian mission. The expansion of the mission's mandate will eventually lead to it becoming a full-fledged military representation. The militarised units are planned to be deployed along the Armenia-Türkiye and Armenia-Iran borders. The main goal of this step is to create favourable conditions for the EU's military presence in the region by using Armenia as a foothold. In reality, the EU's civilian observation mission in Armenia is operating in violation of international norms in the region.

The statement was made in the context of the EU Council’s decision to extend the mandate of the EU Mission in Armenia for a further two years, until 19 February 2027.
The EU Mission in Armenia (EUMA) is a civilian mission that observes and reports on the security situation on the ground, contributes to the security of the people in conflict-affected areas in Armenia, and builds confidence. Through its presence, EUMA also contributes to ensuring an environment conducive to the normalisation efforts between Armenia and Azerbaijan supported by the EU.
The mission was launched in Armenia in response to a request by Armenia. EUMA conducts routine patrolling and reports on the situation, which strengthens the EU’s understanding of the situation on the ground.
The decision to deploy EU monitors on the border between Armenia and Azerbaijan was made after the September 2022 armed escalation. The EU has called for and backed a normalisation process. The EU Mission in Armenia (EUMA) represents a new phase in the EU’s engagement in the South Caucasus.
