DISINFO: Brussels wants to prevent Georgescu’s candidacy in Romanian election
SUMMARY
There is all kind of foul play to disqualify Calin Georgescu. Every time that there is a candidate with its own voice, in favour of the people, all the tools available are used to prevent his victory because those candidates raise all the alarms in Europe. Events in Romania show the decomposition of the European Union. Brussel’s goal is to prevent Georgescu’s candidacy.
RESPONSE
This is an attempt to exploit Romania’s annulment of the 2024 presidential election by the Constitutional Court, trying to frame it as the result of EU interference. Contrary to what this disinformation story baselessly states, Brussels and the European Union had no role in the electoral process in Romania. See a previous debunk of this allegation here.
In other instances, pro-Kremlin disinformation has also accused other Western actors such as the EU or Euro-Atlantic institutions of being responsible for this judicial decision, pointing to a coordinated disinformation campaign surrounding Romania’s presidential election in 2024 and its aftermath. Allegations of Western involvement in this episode lack substantial evidence and misrepresent the actual circumstances of the ruling. The goal of this disinformation message is to stoke anti-Western feelings and discredit democracy and the European Union.
See other examples of similar disinformation narratives, such as claims that the EU interfered in the Romanian elections, that Euro-Atlantic institutions and the US are behind annulment of Romania’s election, that Romania illegally cancelled first round of elections in order to block the raise of a humane, non-anti-Russian candidate, or that elections in Romania are unfair.
