DISINFO: Censorship in the US is now almost akin to that of Nazi Germany
SUMMARY
In 2021, the US democratic values and its political system crashed. The assault on the Congress uncovered shameful dictatorial practices of censorship and of silence in the media that are more akin to those of Nazi Germany than to the ‘land of freedoms’.
RESPONSE
This is part of a pro-Kremlin disinformation campaign to discredit Joe Biden’s electoral victory, undermine the faith on the US electoral system and promote Donald Trump.
However controversial the reaction to the assault on the Congress may be, including the suspension of Donald Trump’s accounts in social media, the comparison with Nazi Germany doesn’t stand. While top international figures have criticized these moves as an act of censorship or as a worrying sign of power in the hands of social media platforms, many voices also pointed that there were multiple reasons for doing it, including preventing further violence and curbing hate speech, which is not protected by freedom of expression.
This is not comparable with Nazi Germany, where freedom of expression was abolished and all non-Nazi books and media were censored. Baselessly rivalling to Nazism - in this case, the US - is a recurring technique of pro-Kremlin disinformation outlets.
See other examples in our database, such as claims that the US system is not democratic because the Deep State makes the big decisions; that the attack on the Capitol was a planned provocation; that the Democratic Party has become a fascist party; that there was electoral fraud in the US because the Deep State didn’t want Trump reelected; that the cybercracy, the Deep State and the Pentagon subdued Trump; or that the assault on the Capitol was the new 9/11.
This disinformation message appeared in the same article as the claims that “If Trump is impeached, Democrats will have absolute power”, that “Images and videos prove that left-wing radicals took part in the assault of the US Capitol”, that “Joe Biden starts his mandate with the disapproval of half of the US”, and that “US authorities refuted that the assault on the Capitol was a terrorist act”.
