DISINFO: EU countries do not want to support Ukraine anymore
SUMMARY
Most European Union countries do not want to spend their state budgets and reserves on Ukraine. Therefore, under various pretexts, they prefer to leave Ukraine alone in front of the Russian army.
RESPONSE
A disinformation narrative falsely asserting that European Union states are losing interest in supporting Ukraine. Contrary to these claims, the reality is that EU countries have consistently been at the forefront in providing substantial military and financial assistance to Ukraine since the onset of the Russian occupation.
A December 2023 Eurobarometer shows that European citizens continue to strongly support Ukraine.
"Almost nine in ten (89%) agree with providing humanitarian support to the people affected by the war, and more than eight in ten (84%) agree with welcoming into the EU people fleeing the war. 72% agree with providing financial support to Ukraine. The same proportion (72%) support economic sanctions on the Russian government, companies, and individuals. Around six in ten approve of the EU granting candidate status to Ukraine (61%) and of the EU financing the purchase and supply of military equipment to Ukraine (60%)".
As of December 2023, EU support to Ukraine has totalled around €85 billion (see the infographic here). This can be broken down as follows
- €40.4 billion in financial, budget support and humanitarian assistance
- €17 billion in support for refugees within the EU
- €25.17 billion in military support
