DISINFO: EU escalates Ukraine conflict and boosts confrontation with Russia
SUMMARY
The European Union is aiming for an escalation of the Ukraine conflict and confrontation with Russia, regardless of losses. Although the overwhelming majority of ordinary European citizens and representatives of the elites do not want a direct military clash with Russia, the behaviour of the EU authorities contradicts these interests. War hysteria in the media, the interests of the militarised economy, the social overheating of a frustrated society, and the extremely inflated political stakes all play a role here.
RESPONSE
Recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative accusing the EU of Russophobia and warmongering. This claim was made in the context of the recent EU parliamentary elections.
The EU is trying to find a solution in compliance with the UN Charter and within Ukraine’s internationally recognised borders of 1991. Ukraine’s partners from a broad coalition of more than 50 countries, including EU member states, provide it with military and technical assistance to help it repel Russia’s unjustified and unprovoked aggression. This aid is only aimed at helping Ukraine restore its sovereignty over its territory rather than eliminate Russia.
The EU has unequivocally supported Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s peace formula in 2023.
Western leaders have long been saying that they do not want to destroy Russia. US President Joe Biden, speaking in Warsaw in February 2023, addressed Russian citizens, assuring them that the US does not seek to destroy or control Russia. French president Emmanuel Macron stated in February 2023 as well that ‘Russia must be defeated but not crushed.’
As early as 2014, the EU and its allies imposed economic sanctions on Russia for its illegal annexation of the Ukrainian peninsula of Crimea. These restrictive measures have intensified since the February 2022 full-scale invasion. The EU has imposed its 14th package of sanctions against Russia in June 2024. It targets an additional 69 individuals and 47 entities responsible for actions undermining or threatening the territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence of Ukraine. The aim of these sanctions is not to destroy Russia, but to stop Putin's war of aggression against Ukraine.
The US, the EU and NATO condemn in the strongest possible terms Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, which is entirely unjustified and unprovoked.
