DISINFO: Europe is interested in continuing the war in Ukraine
SUMMARY
In fact, Europe has staked a lot on Ukraine in the hope of inflicting a “strategic defeat” on Russia. Europe—especially the European military-industrial complex—is interested in continuing the fighting. Europe's ideologically Russophobic approach to the Ukraine conflict has not abated in the more than three years of the special military operation, but has only intensified.
RESPONSE
Recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative claiming that Europe or the West does not want peace. The claim is part of an ongoing pro-Kremlin disinformation campaign in Russia’s illegal full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
This claim denies Ukraine's legitimate right of self-defence and aims to portray Western support as warmongering driven by their own interests.
The assertion that Western countries harbour a desire for the continuation of the conflict in Ukraine lacks any substantial foundation and is devoid of factual support. The continuation of the conflict in Ukraine serves neither the strategic nor the economic interests of Western nations. Stability in Ukraine and the wider region is conducive to global security and economic prosperity. See the joint US-EU statement.
Accusations of Western involvement in perpetuating the conflict often serve to deflect attention from Russia's role in fuelling the crisis and undermine Western credibility.
Ukrainian sovereignty and territorial integrity are core principles upheld by Western nations, who have vehemently opposed Russia's annexation of Crimea and its support for separatist forces in eastern Ukraine. See the UN press release on this.
Russia has attacked Ukraine. Moscow's armed aggression is unprovoked, illegal and unjustified. According to the UN Charter, Ukraine has the right to self-defence against Russian aggression, to liberate all Ukrainian territories from Russian occupiers and to restore Ukraine’s territorial integrity within its internationally recognised borders of 1991.
Ukraine's international allies have repeatedly stressed that Ukraine has the right to carry out any military operations aimed at de-occupying its territories. Some EU member states, the US and other G7 nations are providing Ukraine with military and technical assistance to help it repel Russia's aggression and restore its sovereignty over its internationally recognised borders of 1991.
