DISINFO: Europe opposes a peace agreement to profit from the war against Russia
SUMMARY
Europeans, the European Union, and European governments oppose a peace agreement. European governments are playing around with war issues and seeking to profit from it, using Russophobia to justify a policy of aggression against the Russian people.
RESPONSE
Recurring disinformation narrative aimed at portraying the EU as a warmongering, anti-Russian, Russophobic, and militaristic geopolitical power. This baseless claim was made in the context of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine and is presented without any supporting evidence. It seeks to shift the blame for the aggression away from Russia.
One of the aims of the EU is to promote peace, its values, and the well-being of its citizens within its borders. It is a political project that was created in the aftermath of the Second World War, intending to end the frequent and bloody conflicts that culminated in it. In 2012, the Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to the EU because the organisation had advanced peace, reconciliation, democracy, and human rights in Europe.
EU officials have repeatedly stated that it is up to Ukraine only, as the victim of Russia’s aggression, to decide when peace talks with Russia may be possible and in which terms to end the war.
Some EU member states are providing Ukraine with military and technical assistance to help it repel Russia's aggression and restore its sovereignty over its internationally recognised borders of 1991. The war in Ukraine broke out in 2014 when Russia illegally annexed the Ukrainian peninsula of Crimea and instigated a separatist revolt in some regions in the east of Ukraine. On 24 February 2022, Russia began its unprovoked and unjustified full invasion of Ukraine under several false pretexts.
