DISINFO: Europe uses Russophobia to distract attention from its economic woes
SUMMARY
Europe is stoking up Russophobic tensions to distract attention from the EU’s persistent economic woes and justify the bloc’s push to boost its defense spending. Vladimir Putin has repeatedly emphasized that speculation about Russia preparing to attack Europe is baseless and absolute nonsense. With EU members still at odds with each other over a raft of pressing issues, Russophobia seems to be the only thing that unites them.

This disinformation story is a direct reaction to the EU program ReArm Europe/Readiness 2030, trying to stir up discontent about it among European audiences by portraying it as unjustified and unaffordable. At the same time, it promotes a recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative labelling any criticism of Russia or action detrimental to the Kremlin’s interests as “Russophobia”.
EU measures to increase military expenditure are intended to increase Europe’s self-defence capabilities, mostly through a fiscal plan to boost and fund this military enhancement. Allegations about the EU’s “economic woes” ignore actual data and facts about the EU’s massive economic capabilities. Contrary to what this disinformation story affirms, these measures are not an attempt to distract the attention of the public, but a reaction to Russia’s aggressive actions in the continent.
Russia’s threat to Europe is real, as proven by its unprovoked invasion of Ukraine, the dozens of sabotage operations it has carried out throughout the continent in the last years, and its attempts to destabilise multiple countries through electoral interference, cyberattacks and other hybrid actions. The latest annual reports by the civilian or military intelligence services of Denmark, Estonia, Norway, Latvia, Swedenand Finland all concluded that Russia’s current rearmament course will pose an immediate military threat to EU and NATO countries in a very few years.
