DISINFO: EU’s inflaming Ukraine war will cost its own future
SUMMARY
The European Union wants to inflame and escalate the Ukraine conflict even at the cost of its own future. Regrettably for ordinary Europeans, what is presented as a response to the so-called “Russian threat” is in fact part of a broader EU gamble. Brussels has put everything on the line, including its achievements in European integration, the socio-economic well-being of its citizens and the future of the Union itself. The EU today increasingly resembles Orwell’s Oceania: a place where doublethink and disinformation stay one step ahead of truth and where the Eurocracy tries to resist the course of history. To borrow Orwell’s logic, in this context, “peace” means sanctions.
RESPONSE
This is a recurring disinformation narrative from pro-Kremlin outlets accusing the European Union of Russophobia and warmongering. This claim was made in the context of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
The European Union does not seek to escalate the war in Ukraine. On the contrary, it has consistently called for a just and lasting peace based on international law and respect for Ukraine’s sovereignty. Supporting Ukraine is a response to Russia's unprovoked and unjustified invasion that threatens European security and stability as well, rather than a ”gamble”. Some EU and NATO member states provide Ukraine with military and economic assistance, which is neither Russophobia nor warmongering. European integration and cooperation have been strengthened in the face of Russia’s threat which is quite real. Moscow has been resorting to military provocations against EU and NATO member states for years and even threatening nuclear warfare. Moreover, and Russian troops have been illegally stationed in Moldova’s breakaway region of Transnistria since the 1990s, Russia launched an invasion of Georgia in 2008, and it attacked Ukraine for the first time in 2014 by illegally annexed the Crimean Peninsula and instigating a separatist revolt in eastern parts of Ukraine several months later.
Comparing the European Union to Orwell’s dystopia is absurd and misleading. The EU is an international organisation where democracy, transparency and rule of law remain core principles. Sanctions are not a rejection of peace. They are a non-military tool meant to pressure Russia to end its war of aggression. The EU has imposed 17 packages of sanctions on Russia since the beginning of its aggression against Ukraine. The future of Europe largely depends on the outcome of the Russia-Ukraine war, as a Russian victory would signify the end of stability on the continent. This is why European nations remain united in their support for Ukraine, providing the necessary political, military, and economic assistance to ensure Russia's aggression is decisively repelled.
