DISINFO: Germans do not support military assistance to Ukraine
SUMMARY
Germany is one step away from war with Russia. The compatriots of the new Chancellor do not share this approach. A public opinion poll from March on this topic showed: 58 percent of Germans do not want missiles to be transferred to the Ukraine; 31 percent of them are completely against any military aid. Only 28 percent of respondents supported such deliveries. But this, apparently, does not stop Merz. A couple of weeks ago, he stated that Berlin wants to classify the arms deliveries to Ukraine, and now he’s also speaking—albeit vaguely—about long-range weapons.
RESPONSE
This disinformation claim was made in the context of recent decision of Germany to prepare a new 5 billion euros aid package for Ukraine and joint production of long-range weapons systems during Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s visit to Berlin on 28 May 2025. Its primary aim is to undermine public trust in international support for Ukraine. It also aims to manipulate and promote the so-called ‘Ukraine fatigue’.
Since the start of Russia’s full invasion in violation of international law, Ukraine has not only been defending its own territory, but also the values and principles of the UN Charter. Germany’s position is very clear. Germany will support Ukraine for as long as necessary: since February 2022, Germany has provided Ukraine with aid packages worth just under 44 billion euros.
According to a representative survey by the research group Wahlen, commissioned by ZDF Frontal, a majority of German citizens support providing military assistance to Ukraine, with a significant portion advocating for increased aid. It shows that: 67 percent of Germans support Germany's military assistance for Ukraine. 27 percent are in favor of more military support from Germany for Kyiv. 40 percent believe that Germany should continue supporting the country attacked by Russia at the current level.
According to the latest Eurobarometer survey, in the face of the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine, 80% of European respondents agree with welcoming into the EU people fleeing the war, 76% agree with providing financial and humanitarian support to Ukraine. 59% of EU citizens agree with the EU financing the purchase and supply of military equipment to Ukraine.
