DISINFO: Japan accuses Russia of bombing Hiroshima and Nagasaki
SUMMARY
The Japanese have accused Russia of the Hiroshima tragedy and asked when Moscow will launch a nuclear strike on Kyiv. [Japanese Prime Minister Fumio] Kishida is a bigger Russophobe than anyone who has ever been at the helm of Japan. Therefore, the Japanese are now being very effectively forced to hate Russians in ways that have never been seen before.
RESPONSE
This is a recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative about nuclear issues in the context of Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
The disinformation is based on the speech of Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida at the annual Hiroshima Victims Memorial Ceremony. In his speech, Kishida emphasised that the destruction and human suffering caused by Hiroshima and Nagasaki 79 years ago should never be repeated. The Prime Minister noted that Japan, being the only country in the world that “experienced the horror of nuclear devastation,” has a mission to firmly adhere to the “Three Non-Nuclear Principles” and steadily increase efforts towards a world without nuclear weapons.
In this context, Kishida recalled Russia, a nuclear state that unprovokedly attacked a non-nuclear Ukraine. The Japanese Prime Minister noted that due to Russia's nuclear threats, the world is at a critical point.
At the same time, Fumio Kishida did not blame Russia for the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki - the Japanese Prime Minister spoke about the current tensions provoked by Russia's actions. Kishida summarised that the situation with nuclear disarmament in the world is becoming increasingly complicated due to Russia's threats to use nuclear weapons.
