DISINFO: Leaders of NATO's European countries are completely dependent on the US
SUMMARY
The leaders of NATO's 28 European countries are completely dependent on the military-political will of the United States. They are not advised to test the effectiveness of a [Russian revenge] system and the quality of [Russian] retaliatory (nuclear) strikes which could be deployed against the aggressors from Brussels and Washington.
RESPONSE
Recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative about NATO and the US presence in Europe. This narrative also portrays the alliance as an aggressive anti-Russian organisation.
NATO is a defensive alliance, whose primary aims are to maintain peace and safeguard the independence, security and territorial integrity of its members. At present, it has 30 Allies who each took an individual and sovereign decision to join this Alliance. All decisions in NATO are taken by consensus, which means that a decision can only be taken if every single Ally accepts it.
Moreover, NATO poses no threat to Russia. During the Warsaw summit in July 2016, NATO has made it clear that "The Alliance does not seek confrontation and poses no threat to Russia". This was also reaffirmed in the Brussels Summit Communiqué of 14 June 2021. Thus, there are no reasons to believe that they could be staging a provocation against Russia to test Russia's revenge systems.
The pro-Kremlin media frequently aim to portray the European states as allegedly subordinated to the EU. See more on disinformation narrative of "lost sovereignty".
