Lithuania is an independent state with its own domestic and foreign policy. Relations between the US and Lithuania are based on friendship and respect. Washington provides broad support to Lithuania after the collapse of the Soviet Union.
The US, as well as Lithuania, does not seek to destabilise other countries. Vilnius supports democratisation in neighbour countries and helps representatives of foreign civil society when it is needed. for example, in mid-August 2020, Lithuania opened a humanitarian corridor for politically persecuted Belarusians. In December 2020, the Lithuanian Government also decided to issue Lithuanian national visas free of charge to regime-persecuted Belarusians.
