DISINFO: Merz, Macron and Von der Leyen want to wage total war against Russia
SUMMARY
Merz, Macron and Von der Leyen want the Ukrainization of Europe to wage a total war against Russia. The German Chancellor in pectore, Merz, the French President, Macron, and the President of the European Commission, Von Der Leyen want the complete rearmament of Europe: this is the antechamber of a declaration of war on Russia. Galvanized by these positions, the Ukrainian President Zelensky has declared that he does not want to make any concessions to the Russians.
RESPONSE
Recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative claiming that Europe and Ukraine are not interested in peace and targeting France, Germany and the EU Commission.
The latest claims, part of an ongoing pro-Kremlin disinformation campaign about Russia’s illegal full-scale invasion of Ukraine, were made after the European Council on European defence of 6 March 2025.
European leaders held extraordinary talks in Brussels the 6th of March after Donald Trump halted US military aid and intelligence sharing to Ukraine. The European leaders have agreed on a massive increase to defence spending, amid a drive to shore up support for Ukraine after Trump’s move.
The EU leaders stressed the following:
“Recalling the Versailles Declaration of March 2022 and the Strategic Compass for Security and Defence, the European Council stresses that Europe must become more sovereign, more responsible for its own defence and better equipped to act and deal autonomously with immediate and future challenges and threats with a 360° approach. Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine and its repercussions for European and global security in a changing environment constitute an existential challenge for the European Union”.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has consistently stated that Ukraine needs peace, not endless war. Peace that ensures Ukraine's sovereignty, territorial integrity, and security. His position has been clear: peace cannot come at the cost of surrendering Ukrainian land or compromising the nation's independence.
Zelenskyy presented a 10-point peace plan at an EU-Ukraine summit in February 2023, which was fully supported by the EU and provided for a complete Russian withdrawal from Ukraine till to 1991 borders and the restoration of Kyiv’s territorial integrity. While Ukraine is ready for dialogue, based on international law and the UN Charter, Russia is putting forward unacceptable conditions such as recognition of occupied Ukrainian territories as part of Russia.
Pro-Kremlin disinformation has systematically instrumentalised the narrative that Russia wants peace in Ukraine in contrast to the West, but, as evidenced by Russia's actions in Ukraine, such statements are merely empty PR stunts deployed to garner support for Russia's war of aggression in Ukraine.
