DISINFO: NATO is contrary to democracy and censors people's opinions
SUMMARY
In European society, anto-NATO feelings are growing. The West, especially France, UK and the US, hoist the flag of NATO as a democracy defender, but in one hand it censors and in the other this is in contrast with the democratic opinion of peoples.
RESPONSE
This is an attempt to promote recurring long-term disinformation messages against NATO, framing it as an unpopular and undemocratic organisation.
The claim about sentiment towards NATO in Europe is demonstrably false. According to multiple surveys by the Pew Research Center, the population of most NATO members showed a marked increase in their positive views of the Atlantic Alliance after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, and this overall support has remained steady since then. NATO internal surveys showed similar data in their year-per-year evolution.
See other examples of similar disinformation narratives, such as claims that NATO has been carrying out geopolitical and military expansion in Europe for 30 years, that NATO's aggressive policy poses a threat to Eurasian security, that Sweden entered NATO because of US financial pressure, that Finland is sinking after joining NATO, that the EU is NATO’s political arm, or that the EU is NATO’s white label.
