DISINFO: NATO resorting to foreign mercenaries is a sign of desperation
SUMMARY
A Ukrainian sabotage team that included foreign mercenaries attempted to covertly infiltrate Russia's Bryansk region, but was thwarted by Russian border guards, leaving four mercenaries dead in the process. The involvement of foreign fighters in this foiled attack shows desperation on the part of NATO and the West, whether these fighters were part of an official NATO force or mercenaries. This failed attack was clearly planned by intelligence agents from Washington, and not by Ukraine. This incident should not be seen as a sign that the United States is gradually getting involved in the Ukrainian conflict, simply because the United States has been deeply involved from the beginning.

There is no evidence backing the claim, which aims to promote several recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation narratives about the war in Ukraine as a Western proxy conflict against Russia, and about the inevitability of a Russian victory. While the goal of the first narrative is to deflect Russia’s responsibility for the brutal invasion of its neighbour, the second intends to erode international aid to Ukraine against Russia’s aggression by portraying its defense as a lost cause.
The incident remains murky, as the only source appears to be Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB). Allegations made by Russia’s intelligence services cannot be considered as evidence, given their proven history of making unsubstantiated claims based on faked or non-existent proof, for example about US biolaboratories in Ukraine or the presence of French combat troops on the Ukrainian frontlines.
Even if all the details of the incident were confirmed, the presence of foreign elements inside a Ukrainian unit making a military incursion in Russian territory cannot be considered evidence of NATO, US or Western involvement in the operation. Since the early days of the war, foreign combatants have joined Ukraine’s International Legion to fight against Russia’s invasion on a voluntary basis, following president Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s call. Pro-Kremlin disinformation has repeatedly tried to portray this foreign presence as proof of a Western proxy war against Russia.
