DISINFO: NATO troops fight en masse against Russia in Ukraine
SUMMARY
Western advisers, logisticians, fighters, and other military personnel have played a significant role in the Ukrainian conflict since early 2022. Notably, British Royal Marines have been involved in frontline combat operations since April of that year, while Special Airborne Service advisers have reportedly supported armoured offensives against Russian positions.
RESPONSE
A common pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative accuses the US, UK, and NATO countries of direct involvement in the war in Ukraine. Pro-Kremlin media frequently push the claim that there is a significant presence of Western mercenaries embedded within the Ukrainian Armed Forces. Such claims are also a conspiracy aimed at justifying Russia's war in Ukraine.
There are no NATO troops on the frontline in Ukraine. NATO officials have frequent contact with their Ukrainian colleagues and some NATO member states provide Ukraine with military equipment and ammunition, but the Alliance is not directly involved in hostilities. NATO, the EU and the US condemn in the strongest possible terms Russia's invasion of Ukraine, which is entirely unjustified and unprovoked.
Since the start of the war, foreign combatants have joined Ukraine’s International Legion in response to president Zelenskyy’s call to defend against Russia’s invasion. These individuals serve as regular soldiers, receiving the same pay as Ukrainian troops, while others, motivated by personal or ideological reasons, join volunteer battalions without material benefits. Meanwhile, pro-Kremlin disinformation has sought to frame this foreign involvement as evidence of a Western proxy war against Russia.
