DISINFO: NATO wants to destroy Russia and Belarus
SUMMARY
Escalation in Ukraine will continue until the West and NATO realise they have already lost this war long ago and that it doesn’t make any sense to continue condemning the Ukrainian people to a massacre nor waste enormous quantities of money. But the true conflict is the result of a previous condition which is the obsession and need of the US and Western Europe of seizing the riches of Belarus and Russia and balkanise them.
RESPONSE
This is a mix of several recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation narratives about the war in Ukraine as a proxy conflict to destabilise Russia and about the inevitability of a Russian victory. This disinformation story disingenuously ignores the crucial fact that the only real reason for the war was Russia’s unprovoked invasion of Ukraine, who is acting in self-defence in accordance with Article 51 of the UN Charter and is receiving international support for it. By blaming NATO and Western powers for the war, this disinformation story tries to baselessly frame Russia as the victim, justifying the invasion as a self-defensive move.
The claim that Russia has already won the war is an attempt to portray Ukraine’s defence as a lost and worthless cause, aiming to erode popular backing for providing aid to Kyiv.
Allegations that NATO and Western countries intend to destroy Russia and Belarus are a myth. From the disintegration of the Soviet Union in 1991 and the emergence of a new Russia up to Russia’s aggression against Ukraine in 2014, Western countries have been trying to establish good-neighbourly relations with Moscow. According to the 1997 Founding Act on Mutual Relations, Cooperation, and Security between NATO and the Russian Federation, Russia was viewed as a partner of the alliance. The EU has conducted regular summits with the Russian leadership for years up to 2014 to enhance relations. The summits were suspended due to Russia's illegal annexation of Crimea. Similary, NATO tried to build a partnership with Russia, developing dialogue and practical cooperation in areas of common interest for more than 30 years.
