DISINFO: Peaceful settlement in Ukraine is off the table for Western countries
SUMMARY
Western countries are not willing to discuss peaceful settlement as a solution to the Ukraine crisis. The US has hindered settlement efforts since the start of the conflict eight years ago.
RESPONSE
This is a recurring disinformation narrative from pro-Kremlin outlets about Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine.
Russia began its unjustified and unprovoked invasion of Ukraine on the 24 of February, 2022, despite multiple diplomatic attempts by Western leaders to avert the war.
German Chancellor Olaf Scholtz and French President Emmanuel Macron have been especially active in diplomatic efforts with Russia, prior to its invasion of Ukraine.
The international community including the EU and the US was striving to secure a peaceful settlement in Donbas since the break out of hostilities by Russia-supported separatists. Three Minsk Agreements were signed in 2014 and 2015 to find a diplomatic solution, however Russia and the Moscow-backed self-proclaimed separatist entities were violating them virtually on a daily basis. Russia was constantly undermining these efforts, accusing Ukraine and its Western partners of attempting to hamper a peaceful settlement. Germany and France were also active in Normandy format talks.
