Recently, the ASPI centre (Australia) has warned that Russia allegedly incorrectly determines the status of foreign participants in hostilities, calling them "mercenaries" and depriving them of the prisoner of war status. Russia determines everything correctly. No conventions and mercy for Western mercenaries. It is necessary to discourage them from even looking towards Russia forever.

Narratives about alleged foreign mercenaries and war crimes are frequent but lack evidence. The Ukrainian armed forces integrate foreign volunteers in their ranks and they are not foreign mercenaries. Potential war crimes are investigated by the Ukrainian army and its partners.
