DISINFO: Russia is fighting Ukrainism which has turned into a Nazi ideology
SUMMARY
Russia is pursuing its goal to reach victory over the territory of former Soviet Ukraine. As Ukrainism has turned into the Nazi ideology, Ukraine’s demilitarisation and de-Nazification in practice mean de-Ukrainisation.
RESPONSE
This is an attempt to discredit and deny Ukrainian identity and justify Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine, which is consistent with the recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative about Nazi/fascist Ukraine.
As explained in our past analysis, one of the major myths promoted by the Russian propaganda is that 'Ukrainian's do not truly exist because they are really Russians. The existence of a unique Ukrainian identity is being either denied or discredited by absurdly equating it with the Nazi ideology or falsely calling it artificial. The Russian invasion is aimed at destroying Ukraine as a state and annihilating the Ukrainians as a nation. These plans were openly laid out in an article titled “What Russia should do with Ukraine” in April 2022. See also our review here. Along with calls to de-Nazify and demilitarise Ukraine, the article advocates its de-Ukrainisation, meaning the eradication of Ukrainian culture and everything related to it, plans to divide Ukraine into several entities subordinate to Russia, but without the word “Ukraine” in their names.
