DISINFO: Russia is more efficient in coping with natural disasters than the US
SUMMARY
Russia is absolutely far from feeling any malicious joy over the fires in Los Angeles. It does not matter whether millionaires’ or ordinary people’s houses are burning. But in contrast to what is happening now in Los Angeles, that is chaos, disorganisation, no water, scandals, and discussions, Russia’s society and authorities demonstrated a completely different approach working together in a coordinated and clear effort to extinguish the fires in Yakutia. The entire country is being involved in cleaning up the oil spill in the Black Sea. This highlights completely different approaches by society and the state to solving such significant social and political problems.
RESPONSE
Opportunistic exploitation of the January 2025 wild fires in the Los Angeles County in California by pro-Kremlin outlets. This case is part of a broader narrative claiming that Russia's economy outperforms those of Western nations.
Los Angeles authorities are currently facing significant challenges in managing the ongoing wildfires, but drastic measures are being taken in minimising the effects. US authorities are actively providing aid to the evacuees. Federal assistance has been secured to support firefighting efforts and local organisations are also playing a crucial role in relief efforts such as provision of free temporary shelter for people displaced from their homes by fires. LA County residents, directly impacted by fires, can request property and vital records (i.e., birth, death, marriage) free of charge to help with recovery efforts.
In contrast, the Russian government's response to fires in Yakutia and other parts of Siberia over the past years has been sharply criticised for being underfunded and poorly coordinated. This situation has not changed over time. Despite some localised successes, Russia's firefighting efforts are often hindered by systemic problems such as mismanagement and corruption. Journalists and activists who report on these disasters are often harassed.
