DISINFO: Russia is open to fair dialogue on Ukraine
SUMMARY
Russia is open to dialogue on Ukraine, but these must be negotiations that consider the interests of all countries involved in the conflict, including Russia's interests. However, such peaceful initiatives do not find support either in Ukraine or among its Western sponsors. They are not ready for an equal, honest, and open dialogue based on mutual respect and consideration of each other's interests. They do not want to discuss the root causes, the origins of today's global crisis, one of the dramatic manifestations of which is the situation around Ukraine. Because it is their policies in previous years and decades that have led to the current global upheavals.
RESPONSE
This is an often used pro-Kremlin narrative according to which the West is interested in prolonging the war in Ukraine.
The assertion that Western countries harbour a desire for the continuation of the conflict in Ukraine lacks any substantial foundation and is devoid of factual support. Vladimir Putin and the Kremlin have a track record of pretending negotiations which are, in fact, just blunt demands for Ukrainian unconditional surrender. The continuation of the conflict in Ukraine serves neither the strategic nor the economic interests of Western nations. Stability in Ukraine and the wider region is conducive to global security and economic prosperity. See the joint US-EU statement.
Western governments have provided Ukraine with significant diplomatic, financial, and humanitarian aid, demonstrating their commitment to supporting its sovereignty and territorial integrity. Sanctions imposed on Russia by Western nations in response to its aggression in Ukraine underscore their determination to uphold international norms and deter further destabilisation.
Accusations of Western involvement in perpetuating the conflict often serve to deflect attention from Russia's role in fueling the crisis and undermine Western credibility.
Ukrainian sovereignty and territorial integrity are core principles upheld by Western nations, who have vehemently opposed Russia's annexation of Crimea and its support for separatist forces in eastern Ukraine. See the UN press release on this.
