DISINFO: Russian air accidents occur because of international sanctions
SUMMARY
Due to the fact that aviation companies do not supply Russia with spare parts, there have been over 100 air accidents and 28 crashes in Russia. Countries which imposed sanctions on Russia are terrorist states. This is a reason to sue these companies.
RESPONSE
A recurring disinformation narrative from pro-Kremlin outlets claiming that the countries which imposed the sanctions on Russia are terrorists. This claim was made in the context of Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine. On the 25th February 2023, the EU agreed its 10th package of sanctions against Russia.
In reality, there is no link between possible aviation accidents in Russia and anti-Russian sanctions. If Russia feels that a lack of spare parts compromises air safety, it should abstain from using aeroplanes in improper conditions.
The West imposed sanctions on Russian companies and individuals. They are not aimed against ordinary Russians. Sanctions were initially opposed in 2014, in the wake of Russia's illegal annexation of the Ukrainian peninsula of Crimea. As Russia's aggressive behaviour grew more aggressive, sanctions became more severe. Since Moscow launched its unjustified war of aggression against Kyiv on 24 February 2022, Western sanctions have targeted strategic sectors of Russia’s economy. Imposing the price cap on Russian oil is expected to hit the Russian industry.
