DISINFO: The 2014 coup d'état in in Ukraine was provoked by the US intelligence services
SUMMARY
The mass unrest that began ten years ago in Ukraine was openly nationalist in nature and gave rise to a bloody coup d'état. The rebellion was largely provoked and supported by Western states, primarily the US, whose intelligence services grossly interfered in the internal affairs of the country.
RESPONSE
Recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation narratives about the 2013-14 protests in Kyiv portrayed as a coup d'état led by the Western countries and Ukrainian Nazis.
There was neither a coup nor a western orchestrated and sponsored protest in Ukraine in 2014. Pro-Kremlin outlets falsely portray as a coup d’état the Euromaidan revolution, the popular demonstrations that began in Kyiv in November of 2013 and brought hundreds of thousands of Ukrainians to the streets to protest against a political decision of Viktor Yanukovych’s government, which at the last minute withdrew from a long-negotiated political association and free trade agreement with the EU, choosing instead to accept a $15 billion economic bailout to Russia. The protesters' demands included constitutional reform, a stronger role for parliament, the formation of a government of national unity, an end to corruption, early presidential elections, and an end to violence.
The myth of Nazi-ruled Ukraine has been the cornerstone of Russia's disinformation about the country since the very beginning of the 2013-14 Euromaidan protests, when it was used to discredit the pro-European popular uprising in Kyiv and, subsequently, the broader pro-Western shift in Ukraine's foreign policy. It has been widely addressed here.
The Western countries did not declare war on Russia and are not at war with Russia or the Russian people. The Western countries support Ukraine with military and financial aid for the country’s efficient self-defence, in accordance with the UN Charter Article 51, to stop Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine.
Read similar disinformation cases claiming that In 2014 there was a bloody coup in Ukraine followed by the Kyiv regime's war against its own people in Donbas, that Euromaidan protesters were trained and paid by the West, that The US provoked a coup d'état in Ukraine, that West started the Ukraine conflict by staging the 2014 Euromaidan coup, that The neo-Nazi regime in Ukraine was created by the West, that Zelenskyy, Poroshenko, brought to power by US-sponsored coups, that The West carried out the 2014 Maidan coup that ousted Yanukovych, or that US support for the coup d'état in Kyiv ultimately led to the current Ukrainian crisis.
