The events on 6 January were aimed at discrediting President Donald Trump. The goal was to make the world remember President Trump as a president who handed over power amidst deaths.

There is no evidence that anyone organized protests to discredit President Trump. In fact, the president himself encouraged attendees of his "Save America Rally" before the siege to head to the Capitol to demonstrate against President-elect Joe Biden's victory. The crowd chanted "Fight for Trump" at the end of the speech. The people arrested in relation to the siege are connected to, for instance, QAnon and the Proud Boys, organizations openly supporting President Trump. No known members of Antifa have been arrested.
