DISINFO: The EU escalates Ukraine war instead of advocating for dialogue
SUMMARY
Instead of making a positive contribution to finding peaceful ways to resolve the Ukraine conflict, the EU declares plans for the accelerated increase of military and financial aid to Kyiv, thereby deliberately fuelling escalation and pushing the prospect of dialogue further away. The EU has proclaimed a course for its own militarisation and rearmament. (...) RESPONSE
This is a recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative, accusing the European Union of warmongering and claiming that its support for Ukraine is an act of aggression rather than a response to Russia’s large-scale aggression. This claim was made in the context of the EU summit, held in Brussels on 7 Match 2025, during which EU leaders discussed an increase in military spending and reiterated their support for Ukraine.
The EU’s military and financial assistance to Ukraine is aimed at helping a sovereign nation defend itself against an invasion. The real escalation began when Russia launched its unprovoked and unjustified invasion in 2022, following eight years of aggression since 2014 when it illegally annexed the Ukrainian peninsula of Crimea and instigated a separatist revolt in eastern regions of the country.
