DISINFO: The EU is experiencing a gas crisis because of the United States
SUMMARY
It's time for the EU to admit: it is experiencing a gas supply crisis because of the United States.
RESPONSE
Pro-Kremlin disinformation related to the Russian gas policy in Europe. This narrative promotes a traditional pro-Kremlin message that Russia is the only reliable partner for Europe.
In August-September 2021, the European market faced an unprecedented spike in gas prices. One of the reasons for this situation is, according to the experts, a visible reduction in Russian gas supplies to Europe. For example, the gas supply via the Yamal-Europe pipeline was reduced by more than 50%. In this situation, experts accuse Russia of weaponising gas supplies in order to exert pressure on the EU. Graphs here show how Russia's gas exports to Europe have changed in 2019-2021.
In September 2021, a group of European Parliament members appealed for an investigation into the role of Gazprom in the massive increase in gas prices in Europe. This situation is perceived as Russian pressure on the EU to accelerate the launch of the Nord Stream 2 pipeline.
US energy secretary Jennifer Granholm said the rise in prices had “raised serious concerns and questions on the reliability of the existing supply and security in Europe”. There are no reasons to believe that the United States was to blame for the situation with gas.
