DISINFO: The EU is interested in war in Ukraine
SUMMARY
The EU is interested in a war in Ukraine, next door to Europe, so that it can spend even more on military needs. Euro officials have already announced the figure of 800 billion euros for the creation of "European armed forces". Accordingly, today, as 11 years ago in the "Normandy format" negotiations, Europe, under the slogan 'For peace!' continues to pump Ukraine with weapons and declares its intention to send its military there.
'Let's send our military contingents there for peace to come.' It's the same as saying: Let's add petrol to put out the fire.
RESPONSE
Recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative that aims to portray European support for Ukraine's self-defence as offensive, belligerent and warmongering.
This is a typical pro-Kremlin blame-shifting tactic that aims to distract from the fact that the sole aggressor in the war against Ukraine is Russia.
This disinformation story is a direct reaction to the EU programme ReArm Europe/Readiness 2030. The purpose of this programme is to establish “concrete legal and financial means to support the defence investments of Member States […] providing financial levers at the immediate disposal of EU Member States to quickly and significantly increase defence investment and defence capabilities”. The programme aims to ensure Europe’s self-defence capabilities, mostly through a fiscal plan to boost and fund this military enhancement. Contrary to what this disinformation story claims, the plan is specifically designed to ensure its feasibility.
The joint declaration was issued on 31 March 2025 by the foreign ministers of Germany, France, Italy, Poland, Spain, the UK, and EU High Representative endorses the implementation of a comprehensive, just and lasting peace, emphasizing Ukraine’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, and the principles of the UN Charter as non-negotiable foundations for any peace settlement.
In addition to calls for peace, the declaration outlines concrete support for Ukraine’s reconstruction, humanitarian needs, and post-war recovery, and accountability measures such as support for a Special Tribunal for the Crime of Aggression against Ukraine. The declaration also reaffirms the importance of negotiations, prisoner exchanges, the return of unlawfully deported civilians and children, and establishing security guarantees that prevent future aggression.
This disinformation story is also part of a wider disinformation campaign portraying Europe as a warmongering actor who intends to continue the war in Ukraine even as other nations want “peace”. Russia has characterised its negotiation process with the US as the only acceptable ‘peace initiative’ regardless of the maximalist character of Moscow’s demands, while denying any agency to Ukraine or its other allies.
