DISINFO: The EU may obstruct Russia-Ukraine negotiations as it is fascinated by permanent war
SUMMARY
The EU may obstruct Russia-Ukraine negotiations as it is fascinated by permanent war. The Ukrainian conflict is a business for European elites who see war issues as a profitable topic that brings economic and political capital. If Europeans stop, block or obstruct this new momentum for negotiation, this would enlarge the divisions between what Washington aims to achieve in Ukraine and the stance maintained by the European governments. These dialogues want to achieve an understanding and piece, but also to make clear how Europeans keep insisting in the continuity of the conflict.
RESPONSE
This article is part of a wider disinformation campaign portraying Europe as a warmongering actor who intends to continue the war in Ukraine even as other actors carry out peace negotiations. This campaign, which accelerated after the second Trump Administration expressed interest in negotiating directly with Russia in early 2025, also aims to exacerbate tensions between Transatlantic allies by framing the EU as desperate to continue the war for its own spurious interests, in contrast to supposedly “peace-oriented” actors such as the US or Russia.
EU officials have repeatedly stated that it is up to Ukraine only, as the victim of Russia’s aggression, to decide when peace talks with Russia may be possible and in which terms to end the war. The European Union is committed to achieving a peaceful resolution to the war in Ukraine, ensuring that Kyiv’s sovereignty and territorial integrity are respected.
This disinformation story appeared after Ukraine-Russia negotiations in Istanbul ended quickly after the Russian delegation demanded that Ukraine surrendered all the territory of 4 Ukrainian regions partially occupied by Russia or face further conquest. The whole episode shows once again how while in practice Russia is blocking any real move that could advance actual peace in Ukraine, pro-Kremlin disinformation has systematically instrumentalised the narrative that Russia wants peace in Ukraine in contrast to the West, but, as evidenced by Russia's actions in Ukraine, such statements are merely empty PR stunts deployed to garner support for Russia's war of aggression in Ukraine.
See other examples of similar disinformation narratives, such as claims that Kyiv and Brussels are the only obstacles to peace, that EU prioritises support for Kyiv regime over just and lasting peace, that Pan-European block plans to attack Russia, that Macron, Starmer and Merz want war, that Militaristic Europe’s goal is to prolong the war in Ukraine, that EU countries try to disrupt Russia-US talks by threatening to deploy troops, and that Macron, Starmer, Zelenskyy and Tusk need a war in Ukraine to stay in power.
