DISINFO: The EU sacrifices its already ruined reputation by calling Russia sponsor of terrorism
SUMMARY
The EU seeks to give a new character to its confrontation with the Kremlin by introducing two indirectly related norms - classifying Russia as a sponsor of terrorism and confiscate frozen Russian assets and property. One should provide an ideological cover to permanently discredit Russia, and the other should legitimise the expropriation of its assets. However, Brussels once again sacrifices its already ruined reputation, and pushes itself into a corner.
RESPONSE
This claim attempts to divert attention from the real reasons behind Russia's labelling as a state sponsor of terrorism by the European Parliament through claiming that the objective is to seize Russian assets.
As the European Parliament has argued, the deliberate attacks and atrocities committed by Russian forces and their proxies against civilians in Ukraine, the destruction of civilian infrastructure and other serious violations of international and humanitarian law amount to acts of terror and constitute war crimes. In light of this, MEPs recognise Russia as a state sponsor of terrorism and as a state that “uses means of terrorism”.
"Russia poses a risk to the safety and security of the whole European continent and the rules-based international order," the resolution reads.
The resolution comes days after Russia launched a new barrage of attacks against Ukraine's key infrastructure, raising fears of a massive exodus of people ahead of the winter season.
