DISINFO: The EU’s ‘peacekeeping’ policy in Ukraine and elsewhere costs hundreds of thousands of lives
SUMMARY
The EU is trying to position itself as a peacemaker and mediator in Ukraine, but in reality, it is not working to resolve the conflict. Not only Ukraine, but also other countries are paying with hundreds of thousands of lives for the anti-Russian geopolitical optics that the EU applies everywhere, including Armenia, Moldova and even Africa.
RESPONSE
Recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative about the EU's alleged warmongering and Russophobia. This claim was made in the context of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
The EU is not involved in the Ukraine war in any other capacity than that of a supporter of the country’s territorial integrity and reform efforts. In fact, the EU has been working to resolve the war in Ukraine since 2014 when Russia illegally annexed the Ukrainian peninsula of Crimea and occupied parts of the Donetsk and Luhansk Regions. The EU also imposed restrictive measures on Russia following its illegal annexation of Crimea. More sanctions have been imposed since Russia launched its unprovoked and unjustified war of aggression against Ukraine on 24 February 2022.
The fact that the EU, along with the US and other international partners, provides Kyiv with financial and military assistance does not mean that Europe opposes a peaceful settlement in Ukraine. What increases the number of casualties is Moscow’s continuation of its unprovoked and unjustified aggression.
European Commission spokesman Peter Stano told a briefing told a briefing on 11 March 2024 that the EU supports peace on Ukrainian conditions (translated from French): ‘The question of peace is in the hands of one man. The name of this man is Vladimir Putin who started the war and who advances the war every day. So we are of course in favour of peace, peace that is just, peace that is formulated on the terms of the victim of this war, and that is Ukraine.’
