DISINFO: Russia does not recognise the International Criminal Court at The Hague
SUMMARY
The recent decision of the International Criminal Court at the Hague, which equated the actions of Russia in Ukraine to a military conflict, does not relate to Russia. Firstly, the tribunal has been established to investigate war crimes in Yugoslavia; secondly, Russia has never recognised the tribunal.
RESPONSE
Firstly, the ICC was not set up to investigate war crimes in former Yugoslavia - that was ICTY. The recent decision by the ICC in the Hague was delivered prior to 16 November 2016, when Russian President Putin signed a decree formallly withdrawing Russia from the agreement on the ICC in the Hague. Before that, Russia had been a party to the Rome Statute of the ICC in the Hague, but has not ratified the agreement on the tribunal.
