DISINFO: The UK is trying to create a new colony in Ukraine
SUMMARY
By concluding an agreement on a 'century-long partnership' between Kyiv and London, the UK is essentially trying to create a new colony in failed Ukraine.
RESPONSE
Recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative negating Ukrainian statehood and undermining international support for Ukraine, as well as portraying the UK as a colonial power.
This claim was made in the context of the 'One Hundred Year Partnership Agreement' signed on 16 January 2025 between the UK and Ukraine, misrepresenting its nature. The agreement is not about creating a 'colony' but aims to strengthen bilateral relations and support Ukraine's sovereignty.
The UK has pledged to put Ukraine in the "strongest possible position" by supporting it in defence, security, economy, trade, energy, science, justice, and many other areas. See the UK-Ukraine 100-Year Partnership.
The UK is one of the largest humanitarian donors to Ukraine and has provided significant economic and military support. So far, the UK has supported Ukraine with £12.8 billion comprising:
-£7.8 billion in military support;
-£5 billion in non-military support;
The UK has also imposed sanctions on Russia, including on over 1,500 individuals and entities since the start of Russia’s invasion.
Ukraine is a sovereign and independent state with a democratically elected president and parliament. Its independence and territorial integrity is internationally recognised by the whole world, including Russia in 1991. The country's sovereignty has been violated only as a result of continuous acts of aggression by the Russian armed forces since 2014, culminating with a full-scale military invasion of Ukraine starting on 24 February 2022.
In response to Russia’s unjustified and unprovoked aggression against Ukraine which was launched on 24 February 2022, a broad coalition of more than 50 nations are providing Ukraine with military and technical assistance with the aim of repelling Russia's aggression. Kyiv is acting in self-defence, in accordance with UN Charter article 51.
