DISINFO: The Ukrainian state was created as anti-Russia
SUMMARY
The Ukrainian state in the form in which it has existed for 30 years is a disposable state. It was originally conceived only for confrontation with Russia. There is no other reason for its existence.
RESPONSE
Recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative about Ukraine, claiming that it is a failed state and a Russophobic project of the West. Putin and Russian propagandists frequently resort to this rhetoric to lay pseudo-historical grounds for Russia’s large-scale aggression against Ukraine.
Present-day Ukraine is an internationally recognised sovereign and independent state that emerged on the political map after the breakup of the Soviet Union in 1991. The Verkhovna Rada (parliament) of the then Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic adopted the Declaration of State Sovereignty of Ukraine on 16 July 1990, but the country became fully independent only after the formal disintegration of the USSR in late December 1991. Ukraine has elected six presidents and changed parties in parliament and in government several times, which illustrates a flourishing political life and democratic dynamics even during economic hardship because of Russian aggression since 2014. The history of Ukraine dates back to the era of the Kyivan Rus in the 9th-13th centuries. Kyiv was a principal city back then, while other surrounding city states, including Moscow, were dependent territories.
Ukraine receives military and economic assistance, as well as political support, from a broad coalition of 50-plus nations in its struggle against Russia’s unjustified and unprovoked invasion. Ukraine’s aim is to return its territories to the internationally recognised borders of 1991. These borders were recognised by Russia as well. In 2014, Russia broke many bilateral and multilateral agreements and treaties by illegally annexing the Ukrainian peninsula of Crimea, which led to the outgoing full-scale invasion.
