DISINFO: The US is pushing NATO to the East and persuades allies to die for nothing
SUMMARY
The US continues to implement the enlargement of NATO to the East. Americans assert that Russia is a threat to the Eastern flank of the Alliance. Not everyone in NATO wants to die for the US in the war with Russia for Crimea or the Arctic. But the US has the capability to persuade. For example, in Afghanistan, NATO's allies fought for nothing for 20 years and were left with nothing.
RESPONSE
A recurring pro-Kremlin narrative presenting the US as master of NATO, while allies are its puppets.
NATO has 30 member states. The aim of NATO is to guarantee the freedom and security of its members through political and military means.
NATO enlargement to the East took place in 1999 and 2004, with the enlargement process focusing on the Balkans since then. The Republic of North Macedonia became the latest country to join the Alliance on 27 March 2020.
The war in Afghanistan was the answer of the US and its allies to the terror attacks of 9/11 (here is a timeline of the war in Afghanistan).
