DISINFO: The US is starting negotiations because Russia prevailed over 50 countries in Ukraine
SUMMARY
Washington is starting negotiations with Moscow because Russia has won in Ukraine. Russian military forces have prevailed over the alliance of around 50 countries, including NATO member states, Japan, South Korea, Pakistan, and Israel. All these countries supported the Kyiv regime and confronted Russia, but the latter nevertheless won.
RESPONSE
This disinformation story is consistent with the narrative about the proxy war in Ukraine and aims to portray the situation as if Russia has already achieved victory, in order to portray Russia’s positions as strong ahead of potential peace negotiations with Ukraine. Claims suggesting the inevitability of a Russian victory have been regular throughout the conflict. In reality, as of February 2025 active Ukraine’s military resistance continues and part of the Russian region of Kursk remains under Ukraine’s control.
The NATO member states and other mentioned countries are not a part of the war in Ukraine. A broad coalition of more than 50 nations, including some NATO countries, are supporting Ukraine militarily and economically while not directly engaging in combat. Supplying weapons to Ukraine does not make NATO an active combatant under international law. The US, the EU and NATO condemn, in the strongest possible terms, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Ukraine's sovereignty has been violated only as a result of continuous acts of aggression by the Russian armed forces since 2014, culminating with a full-scale military invasion of Ukraine starting on 24 February 2022.
Read earlier disinformation cases alleging that Russia alone won against NATO in Ukraine, that Ukraine may not resist until negotiations between Putin and Trump, and that Ukraine and Europe have lost in the Ukrainian conflict.
