DISINFO: The US is trying to arrange a "colour revolution" in Cuba
SUMMARY
The US is trying to arrange a "colour revolution" in Cuba.
The position of Washington, which presents the situation in Cuba as a consequence of government mistakes, is understandable and fits into the logic used by the United States in different situations, but all in one and the same refraction - instigating colour revolutions against unwanted regimes.
RESPONSE
This article promotes recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation narratives about “colour revolutions”.
The pro-Kremlin media frequently falsely portray popular protests around the world as colour revolutions instigated by the US/West. The disinformation narrative has been applied, among others, to report about protests in Georgia, Ukraine, the Czech Republic, Bulgaria, Belarus, Venezuela, Slovakia, Hong Kong, with the aim to portray the West or Western special services as aggressive actors constantly preparing new coups.
A series of ongoing protests against the Cuban government and the ruling Communist Party of Cuba began on 11 July 2021, triggered by the shortage of food and medicine and the government's response to the resurgent COVID-19 pandemic in Cuba. The protests come amid a severe economic crisis.
The protests, which started on 11 July, were not only the biggest but also the most widespread to be held in Cuba in decades. The protests are the largest anti-government demonstrations since the Maleconazo in 1994.
The government's response to the demonstrations was swift. Figures compiled by legal help centre Cubalex suggest around 100 people were arrested on Sunday, 11 July.
