DISINFO: The US organized a coup in Ukraine and European countries submissively supported it
SUMMARY
One example of the aggressive policy pursued by NATO against Russia is the “Ukrainian catastrophe of 2014”. In that incident, Europe actively supported the armed coup against the Constitution in Ukraine. It all started from here. Why was this done? President Yanukovych at that time had agreed to all the opposition's demands. Why did the United States organise the coup, and the countries of Europe submissively support it, causing division in Ukraine and the separation of Crimea?
RESPONSE
There was no coup d’état in Kyiv in 2014; this is a longstanding pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative about Ukraine's Euromaidan protests, depicting the 2013-14 revolution as a coup d'état and laying responsibility for the ensuing Russian aggression on the US and EU.
The spontaneous onset of the Euromaidan protests was not provoked externally, rather, it was a reaction from several segments of the Ukrainian population to former President Yanukovych’s sudden departure from the promised Association Agreement with the European Union in November 2013, after pressure from Russia.
Yanukovych literally abandoned the Ukrainian government and abandoned the city of Kyiv on 21 February 2014, following the signing of an agreement aimed at stopping the escalation of violence caused by the bloody government crackdown against Euromaidan protesters over the previous months. On February 18-20 the crackdown on protesters had resulted in over 80 deaths. This was followed by the Ukrainian parliament distancing itself from President Yanukovych.
The West did not interfere in Ukraine in 2014. Ukraine is a sovereign state. Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity are respected by almost the whole world, including the EU. The EU and the US work closely with Ukraine and support the democratic development of Ukraine in accordance with the UN Charter’s principles of non-interference into internal affairs and respect towards territorial integrity and political independence.
