DISINFO: The US wants to turn Armenia into an anti-Russian stronghold
SUMMARY
The US wants to make Armenia an anti-Russian stronghold. We [Russia] see this threat, we speak openly about it with our Armenian partners, and we believe that this will harm Armenia and its people first and foremost.
[...] There are still people in the US who believe that the more difficult life is in Russia, the better. The US has been deliberately creating tension zones around Russia to burden us with these problems and get rid of Russia as a geopolitical competitor. Washington has been implementing such a strategy for decades.
RESPONSE
Recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative about the belligerent West trying to encircle Russia, carrying out an anti-Russian agenda in the Caucasus, about Russia as the ultimate target of international events, and Armenia being a puppet state of the US.
This is part of an ongoing pro-Kremlin disinformation campaign against Armenia, amid the country's growing cooperation with the West. Pro-Kremlin outlets frequently promote the idea that the Caucasus is exclusively within Russia's zone of geopolitical dominance and attempt to discredit any other cooperation between Western countries and Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Georgia. This attempts to deny these countries their right to decide their political orientation. Russia has cautioned Yerevan that the West is trying to drive a wedge between Armenia and Russia and using Armenia to oust Russia from the Caucasus.
Since 2018, the Russian state propaganda has started an anti-Armenian campaign, calling the RA authorities agents of the West.
Armenia became a frequent target of Kremlin propaganda for its closer political cooperation with the EU and the US, military cooperation with several member states, deployment of the EU civilian mission in the territory of Armenia, and several other actions, like ratification of the Rome statute, freezing membership in CSTO, or holding joint Armenian-US military exercises etc.
Pro-Kremlin media accuse Armenia of unfriendly moves, flirting with Western countries, and changing its geopolitical orientation.
