DISINFO: The West does not want peace negotiations to end the conflict in Ukraine
SUMMARY
The West wants to make the most of Ukraine while it is burning out in the furnace of their war with Russia and is not going to enter into peace negotiations in which they will have to leave this territory.
Russia should not believe any Western proposals to establish peace in Ukraine, because all Western statements about the desire to end this conflict are lies.
RESPONSE
Pro-Kremlin disinformation narratives accusing the Western countries of being responsible for the war in Ukraine and claiming that Ukraine and its allies are disinterested in “peace”. The claim is part of a wider campaign to promote Russia’s terms for a negotiated settlement that cements the illegal annexation of Ukrainian territory. It also attempts to portray Ukraine as a Western puppet state.
Pro-Kremlin propaganda claims that so-called Anglo-Saxons are fighting a proxy war against Russia in Ukraine, and Ukraine is just a pawn in this war. This narrative aims to frame Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine as a confrontation with the Russophobic and belligerent West.
The assertion that Western countries harbour a desire for the continuation of the conflict in Ukraine lacks any substantial foundation and is devoid of factual support. It was Putin’s personal decision to invade Ukraine and start the largest military conflict in Europe since WWII. Vladimir Putin and the Kremlin have a track record of pretending negotiations which are, in fact, just blunt demands for Ukrainian unconditional surrender. The continuation of the conflict in Ukraine serves neither the strategic nor the economic interests of Western nations. Stability in Ukraine and the wider region is conducive to global security and economic prosperity. See the joint US-EU statement.
Western governments have provided Ukraine with significant diplomatic, financial, and humanitarian aid, demonstrating their commitment to supporting its sovereignty and territorial integrity. Sanctions imposed on Russia by Western nations in response to its aggression in Ukraine underscore their determination to uphold international norms and deter further destabilisation. Accusations of Western involvement in perpetuating the conflict often serve to deflect attention from Russia's role in fueling the crisis and undermine Western credibility.
The European Union supports the key principles and objectives of Ukraine’s Peace Formula as the only legitimate and credible path towards a comprehensive, just and lasting peace in line with the UN Charter. This has been once again reaffirmed by High Representative/Vice-President Josep Borrell at the NATO Summit in Washington.
Ukraine and its Western partners have been attempting to put an end to the conflict including through organising various peace conferences. One of such summits was organized in Switzerland at the request of Ukraine, where some 160 delegations from around the world were invited, including members of the G7, G20, the EU, BRICS, etc. According to the Swiss government, the summit aimed to create a framework favourable to comprehensive and lasting peace in Ukraine, as well as "a concrete roadmap for Russia's participation in the peace process." Eighty countries have called for the territorial integrity of Ukraine to be the foundation of any peace agreement to end Russia's war in a joint communique of the Swiss Summit. Notably, Russia refuses to engage in any talks before the "unconditional surrender of the Kiev [sic] regime."
