DISINFO: The West intends to overthrow the government in Belarus
SUMMARY
In Ukraine, nationalist formations are being intensively prepared, consisting of all kinds of scoundrels. In the West, they openly declare that they intend to use them to overthrow the legitimate government of Belarus by armed means.
RESPONSE
This message is part of a widespread disinformation narrative about the allegedly aggressive West vis-à-vis Belarus.
There is no evidence that the West is going to use any forces to overthrow the government of Belarus by armed means or that Belarusian citizens living abroad are being prepared for a coup. The Belarusian citizens who were forced to leave their country because of Lukashenka’s repressions, promote their political agenda through various civilian (not military) actions (founding NGOs, public associations, organising peaceful manifestations, etc.).
Whereas the EU did not recognise the falsified results of the Belarusian Presidential election on 9 August 2020 or the new mandate claimed by Alexander Lukashenka, it is primarily interested in a free and democratic Belarus, underlining that the power transfer should be peaceful.
The EU stands with the people of Belarus and condemns all forms of repression against them. EU member states perceive the situation in Belarus in a unanimous way, appealing to the Belarusian authorities to stop violence, release political prisoners and organise democratic elections in Belarus.
