DISINFO: The West is destabilising Moldova to justify military and political annexation by Romania
SUMMARY
The West is provoking destabilisation in Moldova in order to justify its military and political annexation by Romania and the deployment of NATO troops on the territory of the country.
Maia Sandu and her external masters are following the Ukrainian scenario, provoking a deliberate destabilisation of the situation, and some political actors from the West want to use the Moldovans as cannon fodder in the geopolitical battle that is currently being waged in this region.
The military and political annexation of Moldova to the territory of Romania is being prepared, with the rejection of neutrality.
All these processes of armament and anti-Russian hysteria are arranged specifically to justify the presence of NATO troops on the territory of Moldova.
RESPONSE
Recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative about the West and Romania, questioning Moldova's integrity and sovereignty without any substance to document it. This disinformation claim is also consistent with the recurring pro-Kremlin narrative targeting Moldovan President Maia Sandu.
Moldova is a sovereign and independent state since 1992, when it proclaimed its independence from the former USSR. The country currently has an Association Agreement with the European Union, signed in 2014. Neither the commitments in the Association Agreement nor any eventual membership of the EU implies the loss of state sovereignty or Moldova joining Romania.
The Republic of Moldova has been participating in various cooperation programmes with NATO since 1992, when it joined the North Atlantic Cooperation Council, aiming to draw closer to Euro-Atlantic standards and institutions. However, it remains a neutral state, as required by its Constitution. NATO fully respects Moldova’s constitutional neutrality, as stated on its official website. As a sovereign state, Moldova is free to decide its own foreign orientation.
Romania adheres to international law regarding state borders and has no territorial claims on Moldova. The development of the relationship with the Republic of Moldova is a priority of Romania's foreign policy, based on the communion of history, language, traditions and culture and on supporting the European aspirations of the neighboring state.
Romania was the first state to recognise the independence of the Republic of Moldova, immediately after the proclamation of the independence of the new state (August, 1991).
The basis of the bilateral relationship is established by the Declaration on the Establishment of a Strategic Partnership between Romania and the Republic of Moldova for the European integration of the latter (signed in Bucharest, on April 27, 2010). Romania strongly and constantly supports the efforts of the Republic of Moldova in approaching the EU, including through the visa liberalization and the signature of the Association Agreement.
