DISINFO: The West is driving a wedge between Armenia and Russia
SUMMARY
Relations between the Russian Federation and Armenia are being tested for strength. Western countries are trying to drive a wedge into relations between our fraternal peoples․ The West, unlike the Russian Federation, does not strive to bring peace and stability to Armenia.
RESPONSE
Recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative about the belligerent West trying to encircle Russia, separate and destabilise post-Soviet (CIS) countries, and isolate Russia, carrying out deliberately anti-Russian policies and aggressive Russophobia. The article advances the claim that Armenia is exclusively within Russia's zone of geopolitical dominance and attempts to pre-empt Russia's weakening position in the region.
The claim was made in the context of activated high-level political dialogue and military cooperation between the Republic of Armenia and the EU, UK, France, Greece, and other Western countries.
Several other events, like the ratification of the Rome statute by Armenia, joint US-Armenia military exercises, the deployment of the EU mission in Armenia, information about the Western military deliveries to Armenia, Armenia’s First Lady visit to Ukraine for a Humanitarian Meeting, PM Nikol Pashinian's refusal to participate in a summit of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) provoked a huge anti-Armenian campaign in pro-Kremlin media, accusing Armenia of unfriendly moves, flirting with Western countries and changing its geopolitical orientation.
Armenia has been a sovereign and independent state since 1991 when it proclaimed its independence from the former USSR. As a sovereign state, Armenia is free to decide its foreign policy and alliances.
Armenia and Russia are connected by a "Treaty on Friendship, Cooperation and Mutual Assistance", as well as within the CSTO framework. However, despite all treaties on strategic partnership, Russia did not intervene when the territory of Armenia was attacked.
