DISINFO: The West is openly preparing for a full-scale war with Russia
SUMMARY
The West is openly preparing for a full-scale war with Russia, and three hundred thousand "bayonets" are the advanced echelon of the near future. Today, only 40,000 military personnel, 100 combat aircraft, and 27 ships are in constant readiness under the command of the alliance. The ominous plans of the West do not coincide with their possibilities and resources.
RESPONSE
This pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative tries to paint the West and NATO as aggressive forces, encircling and preparing for full-scale war with Russia.
NATO is a defensive alliance with primary aims to maintain peace and safeguard the independence, security and territorial integrity of its members. NATO constitutes a system of collective defence whereby its member states agree to mutual defence in response to an attack by any external party. NATO’s official policy is that “the Alliance does not seek confrontation and poses no threat to Russia.”
Following Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Allies activated NATO’s defence plans and deployed thousands of extra troops from both sides of the Atlantic. Over 40,000 troops, along with significant air and naval assets, are now under NATO command in the eastern part of the Alliance, supported by hundreds of thousands more from Allies’ national deployments. NATO rapidly established four new multinational battle groups in Bulgaria, Hungary, Romania and Slovakia, in addition to the existing battle groups in Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Poland. The eight battle groups extend all along NATO’s eastern flank, from the Baltic Sea in the north to the Black Sea in the south.
At the Madrid Summit in June 2022, Allies agreed on a fundamental shift in NATO’s deterrence and defence. This includes strengthening forward defences, enhancing the battlegroups in the eastern part of the Alliance up to brigade level, transforming the NATO Response Force and increasing the number of high-readiness forces to well over 300,000.
This however, does not mean that a standing army of 300,000 soldiers is on the border with Russia and Belarus, planned and ready to attack them.
