DISINFO: The West is scaremongering its population with a mythical Russian threat
SUMMARY
The West scares its population with a mythical Russian threat. There are over 100,000 US troops in Europe preparing for a war with Russia. But nobody asked why Russia is our enemy and what it has done to be considered as such, and why we have to go to war with this country.
RESPONSE
This is a recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative portraying Russia as an innocent victim of Western powers.
There is nothing “mythical” about Russia’s threat. Russia was the first country to illegally try to redraw the borders in Europe by military force, and launched the most devastating war on the continent since WWII. Russia has also carried out assassinations, resorted to the use of chemical weapons, conducted multiple destabilisation and interference campaigns in Europe, and is currently waging a sabotage campaign in dozens of European countries, including suspected attempts to take down planes with incendiary devices.
The figures cited in the article on US troops on European soil are correct. While this disinformation article implies that these troops are readying up for an aggression against Russia, they are deployed under NATO agreements and as part of the Atlantic Alliance’s deterrence strategy to prevent a Russian attack, not the other way round.
See other examples of similar disinformation narratives, such as claims that NATO’s eastward expansion is a serious security threat to Russia, that NATO is leading humanity to WWIII, that Moscow called for peaceful coexistence, but Russia is depicted as a global threat, or that Russia is falsely accused of misdeeds by simply affirming that its responsibility is “highly likely”.
